FREE ME looking for a voulnteer PDF Print E-mail
FreeMe is an organisation based in Sunninghill that rescues, rehabilitates and releases wild animals and injured birds found in urban areas. It is entirely funded by donations so relies on the generosity and compassion of the public. We need a volunteer to help with data capture on Microsoft Excel, as details and progress of all birds and animals are kept on electronic file. This would require 2-3 hours per week. The person should be computer literate but only moderately so as we would initially teach the process which is very simple. Anyone interested should contact Pauline at FreeMe on 011-807-6993, mornings only.

CSI UPDATE PDF Print E-mail
Craigavon Residents! We wanted to give you an update in terms of where we are with CSI, the Craigavon Security Initiative (initiative under the Witkoppen Craigavon Civic Association) Dedicated Suburb Armed Response Vehicle

We have for a while considered how to best go about getting our proposed fence solution for Craigavon monitored and responded to in case of unauthorized breaches. The only answer has always been to have a security company provide the service. We are very pleased that specialist security company 24/7 have placed a dedicated round-the-clock response team and vehicle in Craigavon on a pro bono basis (free) for an initial 6 months trial. This vehicle, which always will have 2 armed guards in it, is available for response to ANY suspicious persons/vehicles/activity within the suburb of Craigavon. The direct cellphone number to the vehicle is 072 021 9794please use them, 24/7!

The understanding we have with 24/7 against them providing this service, is that they get the suburban exposure and therefore an opportunity to offer complex/house security services as and when residents or homeowners might be interested in looking at a change of service provider. Should you wish to contact them directly in this regard, please call and ask for Steve Margo on 011 444 2237 during normal office hours. Please look out for them in Craigavon and give them a wave or a thumbs up - as far as we're concerned, this is a win-win situation for all involved! Fence solution – fundraising

We are pleased to announce that we have almost reached the target amount for the proposed fencing solution - we're about 80% there. However, we are still a few donations short of actually reaching our goal, so if you know someone in the suburb or within your complex who still has not made a donation, however small or large, now is the time to ask them to make a difference. Please feel free to explore how you might be able to get a tax deduction against any donation in this regard - an NPO reference number can be provided upon request.

A special THANKS! goes to BMW Cedar Isle Auto (by Cedar Square) for making a significant donation towards this initiative

Our ambition remains to have the fence in place before Christmas! How to make a donation:

Craigavon Community News no 29 of 2010 PDF Print E-mail
CRAIGAVON COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER   No 29 of 2010  INFORMAL ADJACENT SETTLEMENTS HERE TO STAY The recent violent uprising at Itsotseng, along Malibongwe Drive, now makes the matter of Informal Settlements  a very topical issue. As an introduction, it must be clearly understood that housing is a competence of National and Provincial Government. Local Authorities are simply agents for allocating housing. About two years ago the Gauteng Province and the City came up with a plan for dealing with all of the 180 Informal Settlements dotted around around Johannesburg. In brief, it provides for the following-
  • The goal is to eliminate all Informal Settlements by 2014
  • Those which are on publicly owned land will be regularized (meaning the creation of a formal township layout and demarcated stands), followed by the construction of formal houses. This is subject to the proviso that geotechnical conditions are suitable for development and that bulk services can be linked to services in proximity to the area concerned.
  • Land would be acquired for housing shack dwellers situated on land with unsuitable geotechnical features and on privately owned land as is the case with Msawawa
This scheme is to implemented for Kya Sand and Msawawa in the following manner-
  • The Bloubosrand side of Kya Sand (Plot 51 Houtkoppen)  is to be regularized and formalized
  • Land has been acquired opposite the Lion Park (Plots 19 and 20 Nietgedacht). This area, so we are told, can accommodate about 10 000 housing units.
  • Residents of Kya Sand who cannot be accommodated  on Plot 51 Houtkoppen will be relocated to Plots 19 and 20 Nietgedacht
  • Msawawa residents will be relocated to Plots 10 and 20 Nietgedacht
Last year in October I invited a senior official of the Johannesburg Housing Department to address public meetings at Kya Sand and Msawawa. He publicly confirmed all of the above information. Of particular significance was his statement that the installation of bulk services would commence at Plots 19 and 20 Nietgedacht in June 2010. Therefore, I followed this up in May this year by submitting written questions to council in order to monitor the progress of this project. In a nutshell, there has been no progress. Because Bulk Services  (water, sewers and electricity) are not available. I followed this up with a telephone call to a senior official in the Department of Development Planning. He outlined the following "challenges"-
  • National Government has failed to provide adequate funding to Gauteng Province
  • Eskom cannot provide electricity
(Extract from an email from Ward Cllr Mendelsohn to WCCA)

HOW WILL THIS AFFECT CRAIGAVON????   The informal areas will simply grow and grow tragically occupying private land illegally. It is now understood that there are illegal residents on our side of the Jukskei River on private land too.

CSI  Craigavon Security Initiative  update The raising of funds started very slowly however we are delighted to tell you it has gained momentum.   The good news is that with donations already received and pledges (monies committed not yet paid over) we are more 75% (R45 850.00) of the way there. A big thank you to the following individuals and complexes whose monies we have already been received ~  Fourways Estate, Manyaleti, Lume Gardens, Hein Van Tonder (Madikwe), Talavera, Lynn Jackson (Talavera), S Ruplal (Timon Place), Hein Bezuidenhout (Camelot Estate), D Stojakovis (Fernbrook), Montepulciano, L Smit (Fernbrook), T Guzman (Villa Nova), R Jensen (Mayaleti), Franca Villa, Pierre Naude (Fernbrook), Michael Greef (Poplar Place), H Heydra, J Marques (Fernbrook), Casa Toscana, KJ Good (Avignon), Felicia Buthelezi, Ben Geldenhuys, V Cadman (Fourways Estate), FE Ferreira (Fairview), R & S Botha (Avignon), Villa Atello, G & P Combrink, Timon Place, Vermont Park, Donovan McKay, Debbie Silversten (Fernbrook). If your name does not appear above and you have already made a payment, please forward proof of payment to This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it in order for the payment to be allocated. Our aim is to ensure that the fence is in place before Christmas 2010. Time:             18h30 for 19h00 Venue:           Elf’s Hill, Chartwell RSVP:             This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it  For those of you who read the Fourways Review, you will be very aware that both drug and alcohol abuse seems to be a problem that is on the rise in the Fourways area. Due to this, and the fact that there are many parents out there who are extremely concerned about this issue, it was considered prudent to try and do something both pro-active and positive in this space.  As a result, the Cedar Lakes Home Owners Association has arranged a Drug Awareness Presentation, not just for Cedar Lakes Residents, but also for concerned residents of other neighboring estates and the Fourways community in general. This drug awareness presentation will be done by Mr Devlin Phillips, a reservist for the SAPS, and he will be talking on what various types of drugs look like, as well as their side effects and how readily available they are to buy. He will also talk about the date rape drug and the side effects of this drug.
Please RSVP to Tammy at the Cedar Lakes office by Monday 25 October 2010.

CRAIGAVON COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER   No 28 of 2010 SECURITY IN CRAIGAVONHOW SAFE ARE WE really????? “Megans Manor communal gardener was walking towards Fernbrook Estate. He was attacked by 3 youths on Inchanga Road , they stole his Cell phone, R200 in cash, T-shirt and shoes. Please can you make people aware as I am concerned about people jogging, walking their dogs or kids just walking to their friends in other complexes in the area.”     This incident has just been reported to WCCA.Why more and more Intercoms have been tampered with? Here’s the answer:-A Mercell intercom operates on the same basis as a cellphone. The intercom has a sim card which is placed inside the Mercell before installation. The sim card is either on a contract or a prepaid sim card. They break the lock of the Mercell to remove the sim card. There is no pin number on these sim cards so once they have been removed they can be used like a normal sim card. They use the sim card for internet purposes and to download songs, ring tones etc from the internet. When they use it for internet purposes it cannot be traced. The stolen sim cards are very seldom used to make calls. Even though the window of use for the thieves is limited they are still able to run up huge accounts in a short space. So what’s the answer? Join and be part of CSI (CRAIGAVON SECURITY INIATITIVE) And the good news is ...... one of the largest Security Company operators in the Craigavon area has done just that =  24/724/7 have committed to initially guarding the fence to be placed down at Inchanga Road to stop the trespassing over private land into Craigavon. Additionally, 24/7 are putting in a dedicated vehicle permanently in the area as from Monday 11th October 2010 with its own cell number (will be communicated) with 2 armed guards to be proactive in Craigavon. They will be offering to take over existing contracts at a reasonable fee for residents/complexes.Pamphlets and security information will be handed out to residents shortly. As WCCA, we support this initiative as it represents a win-win situation; residents get a dedicated suburb reaction team and 24/7 who work closely with Douglasdale SAPS gets to assist us in reducing crime. CSI has been started by concerned residents in the area aimed at upliftment and betterment of our neighbourhood. Raz Jensen is heading up this campaign. WCCA fully supports the drive but volunteers are needed to help getting it off the ground - we need residents to contribute financially towards this urgently. Some funds have been collected for which we are grateful but we are far from target: so far 20% of target funds have been raised…Please residents we can do this collectively to live in a safer suburb.Let’s believe that with some action ~ not only will our families be safer, we will sleep better and property prices will increase in value if we can spell this myth of being a 2nd rate suburb. To contact Raz ~  083 637 7059.
